AI Traffic Attribution

How to identify website visits from AI tools, what can be attributed, what cannot, and why the distinction matters for understanding your traffic.

Definition

What is AI traffic attribution?

AI traffic attribution identifies website visits that originated from AI tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and others. When a user clicks a link in an AI-generated response, that click carries an HTTP referrer header identifying the AI platform. Server-side attribution reads that header and classifies the visit as AI Referrer traffic rather than Direct or generic Referral. Where an AI tool provides no referrer, the visit cannot be attributed to that source by any referrer-based method.

Referrer Attribution classifies AI traffic as its own named channel, separate from Organic Search, Referral, and Direct.
