Referrer Attribution is a channel attribution tool. It identifies the source channel of every visit to your website: organic search, paid, email, social, referral, direct, and AI tools, storing that attribution alongside the pages viewed during the session. It does not replace a full analytics platform. It tells you specifically where your traffic came from and what it did, in a form you own and control.

If your site runs WordPress, use the CQI Referrer Attribution plugin. It installs from the WordPress.org repository in under two minutes with no server configuration. If your site is anything else (static HTML, Next.js, Shopify, a custom CMS, or any non-WordPress platform), use Refer App, a standalone PHP application that installs alongside your existing site with one script tag, with no changes to your site's own files.

Traffic from AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity does not carry the UTM parameters or referrer headers that conventional attribution tools use to identify sources. Without a dedicated taxonomy, this traffic is classified as Direct or Unknown, making it invisible in your reports. Both products include a built-in AI Referrer Taxonomy that maps 16+ AI platforms by their known referrer domains, classifying this traffic as its own channel.

In standard deployments, no. Both products use a first-party functional cookie that contains a random session token, no personal data. Under UK PECR, cookies strictly necessary for a service the user has requested do not require consent. This is our assessment; we recommend confirming with a privacy professional for your specific context and jurisdiction.

On your own server. The WordPress plugin stores data in your WordPress database. Refer App stores data in a SQLite file on your hosting account. Neither product sends session data to any third-party server.
