Traffic Attribution Analytics

Referral Attribution

How referral traffic is identified, why it is sometimes misclassified, and what referral attribution tells you about which external sources are genuinely valuable.

Definition

What is referral attribution?

Referral attribution identifies website visits that arrived via a link on another website. The HTTP referrer header carries the domain of the page the visitor came from. Server-side attribution reads that header and classifies the visit as Referral traffic with the referring domain as the source. Referral attribution tells you which external websites are sending visitors, how frequently, and how that traffic behaves compared to other channels.

Referral traffic is distinct from AI Referrer traffic, which is classified separately using a dedicated AI taxonomy.
