Direct Traffic Attribution
What Direct traffic actually contains, why it grows as AI and dark social grow, and how to investigate the sessions arriving with no source information.
Definition
What is Direct traffic in analytics?
Direct traffic is the label analytics tools apply to sessions that arrive with no referrer header and no UTM parameters. It does not mean the visitor typed the URL. It means the attribution system ran out of information. Direct traffic is a classification failure, not a channel. It contains bookmarks and typed URLs, but also dark social shares, AI halo traffic, cross-device revisits, and referrals from pages with a strict Referrer-Policy.
Direct traffic grows as AI usage grows, because a portion of AI-influenced traffic arrives with no referrer.
