Campaign Attribution
How campaign attribution works, why UTM parameters can be lost in transit, and how to preserve campaign data across browsers that strip tracking parameters.
What is campaign attribution?
Campaign attribution identifies visits that arrived via deliberately tagged campaign URLs. UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) are appended to destination URLs in campaign links. When a visitor clicks a tagged link, those parameters are read and stored as the session's attribution data. Campaign attribution tells you which specific campaigns, messages, or placements are sending traffic, as distinct from organic channel sources.
Campaign attribution requires that UTM parameters survive the journey from the link to the destination. Privacy browsers can remove them.
